Today, I am feeling especially grateful for many reasons. Also, this morning I realized that yesterday was the 7th for us but I was so caught up with keeping track of the election, it still felt like the 6th to me. Oops!
07. I am thankful that I was able to get an appointment at the optometrist's office, and that Jess was able to watch Evelyn for me. My eyesight has actually improved since the last time I had glasses a new prescription, which was in 2007 or so. I am thankful that my eye appointment was free -- thanks to Tricare, I only had to pay for the contact fitting fee and my contacts.
08. After putting Evelyn to sleep tonight, I let Toby back outside to eat his supper. Once I put his food down, I happened to look up to our gate. One of the doors was wide open. Cue me slightly panicking, "Is there someone hiding behind our obscenely short bushes, or around the back of the house?" I decided to pull the mail out of the mailbox, walk back inside, lock the door, and go through it. I saw a receipt for one of our utilities bill (it is so great - they give a receipt so you know the cost when the bill comes shortly thereafter). The meter was read on the 8th, which was today.
Okay, so there isn't anyone hiding in the darkness, waiting to knock me out with a club or something. It was likely the gas guy who came in, and forgot to shut the gate. Someone has never forgot to shut the gate when Toby has been out. This made me feel very uneasy. I was gone all day, and Toby was hanging out in the cool shade under his favorite bush in the way back. The gas guy likely came mid-morning and if my theory is correct, left the gate wide open.
What if Toby would've decided to go on an adventure? He is not the most street-savvy dog. When I initially moved out to the farm before Dan and I were married, he would stand in the middle of the road. The farm was right on the county road, we didn't have a long driveway. The road rose a little bit on each side of the farm, so the road was lower right by the driveway, which made it hard to see until you were right on the top of either small hill. There wouldn't be much time to use the brakes because it is just a small dip in the road which you don't even know is there if you aren't familiar with the road.
So anyway, Toby wasn't country-savvy. He became a country dog of course, because I lived out there for 9 months and learned the ways of the country world. There is always so much traffic here and I don't think he'd know to look before he went onto a road, like most of the strays here know how to do.
Long story short, I am thankful that Toby seemingly did not go out to mosey around town. If he did, he came back unharmed. I honestly don't think he left the yard, though. When he has gotten out when the carport door has been shut, he has stood at the gate and barked to be let back in. I think he feels out of his element if he is outside the house perimeter without one of us with him, haha.
