I think I mentioned at least once that for the last half of May, Jess and I were on whelping watch. We called it Whelping Watch 2012 and it was a great excuse for a grown-up sleepover.
Of course Jewel waiting until Dan was home and I was
not spending every night there that her husband was working to start the birthing process. Not only that, but her body decided that the morning that Jess' mom and sister were flying in from the States to have the puppies. We also were supposed to go to Futenma to run a 5k that morning.
Evelyn had woken up in the middle of the night so Dan came in to get me (I had fallen asleep in there) when my "alarm" went off. When I got back into our room, I noticed it was 5:45. I hadn't set an alarm for that early...the earliest I set my alarm that morning was 6:05 or 6:10. I told him, "Let's sleep 10 more minutes" and crawled into bed.
Then my phone rang. Oh boy. I knew what this meant! I answered it, and it was Amber, saying Jess had tried to call me several times. Oops. That was what Dan thought was my alarm. I quickly got some clothes on that I didn't mind getting mucked up, grabbed a diet coke, and sped out of our dead-end street in the Midge. Evelyn stayed home with Dan, until closer to noon, when all the pups were born.
Jess had heard a weird yipping noise and thinking it was Katai (their male dog, the sire of the pups), got off the couch to see what the deal was. In the hallway leading back to the guest bedroom was a lone little pup. After she discovered the pup, she called her back-ups: Amber and me.
I ended up helping break the sacs of three of the pups. The last pup out, Meeko (she didn't have a name for almost a week and a half, poor thing), was pretty blue and I had to scrub her pretty hard before she started moving. That was scary but she made it, and she's a happy little rascal now.
This Saturday the pups will be 3 weeks old. There were six in all -- four girls and two boys. I can remember the order of the first two -- Boki and BJ (Bergie Jr., Katai's nickname is Bergie) -- and the last one, Meeko. The three in between those -- Vee, Fuji, and Roofus-- are kind of muddled. I can't remember which came 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
Here are some pictures of the pups that were taken on my birthday. Enjoy the puppy-goodness! :)
