Long time, no blog. I'm sorry about that. If you're friends with me on Facebook or heard it through the family grapevine, you already know we were without power thanks to Typhoon Muifa.
We lost power mid-Friday afternoon. Friday evening goes by, still no power. Saturday, none. Sunday, none. Monday, none. Tuesday...none (until mid-afternoon). We called our housing agency every day since Saturday as our neighbors had power and we still did not. Mind you our car port door is electric and both cars were parked within it -- we had no way of going anywhere (other than walking or biking).
So Saturday Dan walked to our housing agency -- only a couple miles round trip -- and they were closed. There was, however, a sign on the door with an on-call agent's cell number. Cool. We called.
By Monday evening having no power was getting really old. Cold showers are not fun. I was quickly depleting our nonperishable snacks (making milk for Evelyn makes me as hungry as a bear) and we had cleaned out our fridge and freezer.
There was (obviously) no power and I was sick of looking at Evelyn and seeing her so, so sweaty. Despite the heat, she was a real trooper. Her body, however, was not accustomed to the intense heat and she got a pretty nasty heat rash.
Tuesday afternoon the power company finally made their way here. Our housing agency told whoever (whomever?) they talked to that if someone wasn't out here to help us today, she'd have words with their supervisor. Voila -- insta-fix.
They draped the line that runs to our house from the main line over the roof of our patio. Our best guess, after Dan did some investigating (he climbed on the roof -- ahh I was nervous) is that two of the wires were completely severed because they were rubbing against the abrasive concrete roof during the storm.
I have a lot of things I want to share but not a lot of time where I can sit down, all at once, and write, write, write. That's what naptimes are for but lately I've been either napping with her or reading a good book.
For now I'll leave you with two videos. The first is a video I found on Youtube of Typhoon Muifa. You can easily find more videos by searching "typhoon muifa + okinawa" or something similar.
The second video is from the weekend before my Mom left; we went to Ryukyu Mura and enjoyed looking around how Okinawa was in the past. We viewed a parade of Okinawan entertainment and this was one act of it, I guess you could say. Around 2:20 is when you can watch Evelyn pet the very colorful, very life-like Shisa dog. Watch the volume level on your computer -- the man has a piercing whistle. And be sure to enjoy -- I love the traditional music.
Also, hopefully my video-taking skills don't make you sick. I'm still working on focusing the lens while shooting a video. I'm a novice, all right? :)
I haven't watched the videos yet (going to once H. goes down) but I have to say how happy I am to see a post from you! I can't believe you guys went through that - glad y'all are okay!
