Last Saturday night, Evelyn and I joined some friends at Comprehensive Park to watch Okinawa's roller derby teams battle it out. I had never seen roller derby before; not even the movie that has Ellen Page in it.
It was pretty cool. When you came in you had to remove your shoes so I was glad I wore socks... I can only imagine how much cleaner American sports facilities would be if we took our shoes off. Anyway. I winced quite a bit when someone would bite the dust. The red team (I can't remember their team name) totally dominated the black team, 100+ points to 70-something. Obviously my memory is real great...ha.
I didn't bring my camera but my friend got some pictures so when she gets to putting them on Facebook, I'll snag some to share here.
My favorite part of the night was the half-time show. Eisa dancers performed. I've never seen Eisa dancers, either, so it was a splendid treat.
Here is a video of some Eisa dancers at a parade. The Shisa dogs were my favorite on Saturday night -- you can see on the video how lifelike the people can make the dog's actions appear.
I would definitely go to another roller derby match and I can't wait to watch the Eisa dancers perform at another venue. Maybe during the Obon festival this summer!
