All hail the swaddle!

Ladies and gentlemen, please never underestimate the sweet, sweet power swaddling has over most infants. Let me expand...

While my grandparents were here we came to the conclusion that Little Miss did not appreciate being bound by a swaddle. She would become very surly and in an effort to preserve both our hearing and our sanity we began to wrap her with her arms out of the swaddle.

This continued for about a month, from when she was 2.5 weeks old until this weekend. I read on a forum that a woman's twins really fought being swaddled each night initially but that the discomfort the family dealt with for a few short minutes was remedied by the amazing sleep the boys' got when swaddled.

Ev was still waking up at least three times a night before this weekend. Now that we have resumed swaddling I do believe she continued to wake up because her sharp, jerky movements would startle her awake. The first night we swaddled her again she woke up twice and last night? Only once.

Sweet, sweet sleep. If it was a fluke and she wakes up twice tonight that'll be just fine...it is just nice that we rediscovered such a rewarding additive to our nighttime ritual!

Her anger does rear its little head but patting her back and bum while "shush"ing her or walking around with her causes her to settle quite quickly. Once she gets over the initial shock on not being able to fully move her arms she snuggles in for a before bedtime meal and then is of to dreamland.

Oh - I do believe all parents or parents to be should invest in some sort of swaddling-made-easy device. We have three that are lifesavers (Ev could break out of my pitiful swaddling attempts since birth) - one was a hand-me-down from my cousin and his wife (their little girl is just year older than Ev) and the other two were gifts from my Great-Aunt Terri. If you know someone who is expecting but do not know what to give them seriously consider some sort of swaddling device that goes beyond a traditional receiving blanket.

Three cheers to whoever created the SwaddleMe!
