Space cadet.

When I was pregnant I began forgetting things and misplacing things more often than I did before. Forgetting where I put my keys, forgetting what time an appointment was, losing my ID, etc etc etc.

I am still having issues with my memory. One quick example would be when I was leaving the BX, I put my wallet and sunglasses on top of Midge so I'd have both hands to get Ev strapped in. Got in, buckled up, and began driving. Only once I was close to the gate did I hear something begin to roll on my roof and in my rearview mirror I saw my wallet fall. I never did recover the sunglasses.

The most recent incident that has me wondering if I'll ever have my old memory back again happened at the commissary. I had gotten all our goods and as they were being rung up, I discovered my wallet was not in my purse. I told the cashier that I'd be right back; I had to go get my wallet from my car.

I scurried out to my car, unlocked it, and searched the front seat. In the driver's seat? Nope, not there. Under the diaper bag on the passenger side seat? No. In between the seats? No. Repeat process with back seat and realize that my wallet is gone.

I realize someone must have stolen my wallet from my purse while I was grabbing avocados or picking out some deli turkey. I don't even both locking the car because my wallet isn't in there anyway, and begin walking back toward the commissary. I was so embarrassed; in my head I had already began to formulate what I'd say to the cashier.

I'm so sorry but I think someone stole my wallet, I don't have money to buy these groceries.

While walking back up to the store I felt something wedged between Evelyn and I. Oh, did I forget to tell you? This whole time I've been wearing Evelyn in the Ergo. I reach between us while glancing down at the same time and what do I see? You probably won't ever guess...

Or maybe you did guess. If you guessed my wallet, you guessed correctly. Sigh. I didn't bother telling the cashier that my wallet had been on my person the whole time because that's just embarrassing.

Why did your baby have your wallet? you may be wondering. I often give her my wallet while I wear her so she is occupied, especially if she doesn't feel like being worn. Give her the wallet and she forgets that she didn't feel like being a little koala bear. I am also usually very aware of where the wallet is at all times so it is better to give her my wallet then say, a baby toy. I'm usually hyper-aware of where my wallet is and I am not hyper-aware with a baby toy which could cause many baby toy casualties.

So that's my most recent startling reminder that my memory is less than perfect. Hopefully I'm able to remember this incident the next time I go to the commissary so there isn't a repeat performance.

  1. I think every Mom can relate! I remember how thrilled I was to get my brain back several years after Stephen was born. Then . . . Christina hit puberty and my brain started taking frequent vacations again. It must be some type of self-preservation mechanism!

Be gentle and patient with yourself!
