Japanese Lesson of the Week: Week #11.

During the next two weeks we will cover the DOs and DON'Ts of eating out in Japan. There are some similarities to dining-out etiquette in America and some differences.

This week, the do's. Are any of them surprising to you?

DO
  • Wash your hands with the wet, warm washcloth brought to you at your table.
  • Do be sure to look around the entrance - if there are shoes there, be sure to remove yours. If not you may keep them on unless you are seated at a Japanese-style table. Japanese-style seating is often lower to the ground and you sit on a cushion. Sometimes there may be floor space cut out under the table for your legs.
  • Do look around your table for a buzzer button or bell. You will push the button or ring the bell when you are ready to order.
  • Do wait until everyone is served before starting your meal.
  • Do accept dishes or anything your server presents to you with both hands.
Next week we'll discuss the do nots of dining in Japan. Until then, sayonara!
