Our local AFN (American Forces Network) station has a slogan that says "Rockin' the Ryukyus since (whatever year, not sure)". Pretty catchy though it can get old when you hear it multiple times a day. The Ryukyus is the prefecture we live in, by the way.
Tuesday night the Ryukyus were literally rocked by a couple earthquakes. I was still up put zing on the laptop when the first occurred; in aroused Dan from his slumber which is pretty impressive since he sleeps like a rock.
The first was a 5.4 and the second was a 4.8, which Dan slept through. Ev didn't stir during either while Toby-san merely lifted his head in alarm. During Toby's first earthquake in California he barked.
Just this past weekend we were talking about earthquakes and I was trying to jog Dan's memory of one we felt early in the morning when we had just moved in. I don't know that he thought I was making it up but it was clear he didn't think I had my story straight.
Thanks to Tuesday's rumbling I think he now believes me, even if he still doesn't remember. Thanks, earthquake. And thanks for not knocking anything off our walls or triggering a tsunami.
Oh, then there was one on Thursday morning, too. A 5.6...Dan didn't feel it at work though. Weird!
Greetings from Brainerd. I am behind in reading about your life because I lost the link, but Eric got us back on track again.
ReplyDeleteI also read your Japanese lesson and have a theory on why they say "hai" repeatedly. It is the Japanese equivalent to the standard Minnesota expression, "Yah, you betcha..." which we say when a simple "yes" would suffice. Just a matter of our need to enhance an affirmative responses with additional emphasis.
The exciting thing in my life this week was that I got my Medicare card in the mail. Somehow I think this ranks up there with life's most important first documents: drivers license, marriage license, home mortgage and finally your medicare card. It is not effective until June 1st, so I have a few months left before I join the ranks of the truly old farts.
Keep up the good work with stories of your adventures. So, do I enjoy reading your blog? Yah, you betcha! (Hai, hai, hai!)
