Japanese Lesson of the Week: Week #8.
Konnichiwa! I'm sorry about the lack of JLOTW last week; this week was supposed to be Week 9 but I got behind. By the time I had time to write up a quick lesson it was Friday already and I figured I would just wait a couple days and do it on the normal Monday.
In an effort to increase the longevity of this feature I've decided to only cover one phrase or word per lesson. Therefore I deleted a couple phrases from Week #7 and I will share them again in a later week.
I'm also considering sharing information on the Japanese culture, history, and forms of art. Would that be interesting to anyone?
When you are in Japan you may hear a Japanese woman or man say something to the effect of, "Mmm, hi hi hi." They are not saying hello repetitively to the other person.
When you hear someone saying "hi" they are actually saying hai. Hai means yes in English. You may hear it once, possibly even two or three times in succession. I'm not sure the purpose of the repetition but I've heard it quite a bit.
So, hai in Japanese is equivalent to yes in English. Now you know! Next week we'll learn "no" - thrilling, eh?
Oh, I made a new graphic for this feature ... what do you think?
Have a great week and Happy Valentine's Day!

I would be very interested in learning about Japanese culture, history and art - great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love the new graphic for this feature and I also love the new "Our Island Outlook" graphic.
Happy Valentine's Day to you!
Ebeth - Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! Did you and Sarah have fun this weekend? Was the "heat wave" warm enough to do anything fun outside?
ReplyDeleteWe did, thank you! We were able to go for a walk on Saturday afternoon and spent a little time with Dally and the new puppy. The sun felt SO nice.
