Batallion Family Fun Day and Buffalo Chicken sandwiches.

On Friday we attended "Batallion Family Fun Day". There were lots of family-oriented activities which was great for the few married marines who have children. The majority of the individuals there were Marines that live in the barracks (meaning they are either single or did not bring their families) so there were large clusters of men amongst a bouncy house, slide, and pony rides. It was a silly sight.

The weather was very nice for the event -- overcast with a slight breeze. We sat at a table under an awning and I visited with one of my few wife friends, Erica. We didn't arrive until around noon and we were able to scoot out of there by one. We missed the lunch provided but we were both able to go to baby's appointment and hear her heartbeat.

While we were getting ready to leave, we ran into a couple that is in Dan's platoon. He visited with the husband, I visited with the wife and another wife that is married to someone in 2nd platoon. Anyhoo, they brought their dogs so I was of course fawning over there. Wife #1, Jessica, is expecting a baby! They had their first ultrasound just before they showed up so she showed the photos -- looks just like a little peanut, so cute!

We decided to make our way to our car when my feet got the best of me. I'm a very klutzy person and generally am more off balance on my own feet than I am, say, on the back of a horse. I can't help but trip over myself or over invisible objects that no one else seems to have a problem with. Thankfully my last two falls haven't been in public but on this one I wasn't so lucky.

Remember those large clusters of men I mentioned a couple paragraphs up? Yeah, well I fell down in front of all of them. It'd be silly of me to think that they all saw me or were even paying attention but I felt like everyone saw. There wasn't even anything to trip over! We were just headed up a small hill, I had some questionable walking shoes on, and we were on grass. That coupled with the fact that I am a terror to myself walking anyway (especially with this large growth occupying the anterior part of my body) and I biffed it.

I fell onto my knees and then caught myself on my hands. Oh, the horror! I couldn't stop talking about it until our appointment even though Dan was trying to assure me that barely anyone saw it. Psh, I was still mortified.

That was our exciting first Batallion Family Fun Day together.

On Saturday we had buffalo chicken sandwiches, which were delicious. It was the second time I made them and they definitely tasted better than the first attempt. I once again got the recipe from All Recipes.

Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches

Ingredients:
  • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • 1 (17.5 fluid ounce) bottle buffalo wing sauce, divided
  • 1/2 (1 ounce) package dry ranch salad dressing mix
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 6 hoagie rolls, split lengthwise
Instructions:
  1. Place the chicken breasts into a slow cooker, and pour in 3/4 of the wing sauce and the ranch dressing mix. Cover, and cook on Low for 6 to 7 hours.
  2. Once the chicken has cooked, add the butter, and shred the meat finely with two forks. Pile the meat onto the hoagie rolls, and splash with the remaining buffalo wing sauce to serve.
Modifications: On Saturday I only poured the 3/4 of the wing sauce into the crockpot and didn't bother adding the rest of the 1/4th bottle when they were done as there was plenty of spicy juice to spare.

I realize I haven't put any photos up of the house but our camera was missing for most of the weekend. I located it yesterday but by then there was no natural light left for decent pictures.

Tomorrow we have our 39 week appointment in the afternoon. The little lady has until the 21st to evacuate otherwise they'll attempt to coax her via induction. Let's all cross our fingers that she comes sooner rather than later. We're more than ready to meet her!
